Extremadura plans digital nomad grants of up to €15,000, but applications are not open and you must already live there to apply

The Junta de Extremadura announced on 28 October 2026 a new round of relocation grants for digital nomads, with €4.5 million from the regional employment service (SEXPE) for 2026–2027. The grant rules are still a draft decree, open for public comment from 27 October. Applications will only open once the final decree is published in the Diario Oficial de Extremadura, and will then generally be due within three months.

There are two programmes. Programme I pays €10,000 to applicants under 30, women, or people who register in a municipality of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, and €8,000 to everyone else, for staying 24 months. Programme II adds €5,000 (or €4,000) for a further 12 months, so the maximum over three years is €15,000.

The conditions are tighter than in previous rounds. You must have lived outside Extremadura for the 18 months before moving, up from 6. For Programme I you must already be living in the region and registered on the padrón before you apply. And you must move your tax domicile to Extremadura and pay income tax (IRPF) there.

Why this matters

Headlines saying “Extremadura will pay you €10,000 to move” make this sound like an offer you can sign up for now. You cannot. The grant rewards people who have already moved: the money comes after you have registered locally and changed your tax residence, not before. If you are weighing a move, treat it as a possible bonus once you are settled, rather than as funding for the move itself.

This is a regional relocation grant, not a visa. It does nothing to change Spain’s digital nomad visa, whose income requirement remains €2,849 a month in 2026.

What to watch

Publication of the final decree in the DOE, which starts the application window.
