OpenAI starts testing paid brand agents inside ChatGPT conversations

OpenAI announced on 16 September 2026 that it is testing Sponsored Agents: after clicking an ad in ChatGPT, a user can start “a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent”. OpenAI states that the sponsored conversation “is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation that the user started in ChatGPT”. The test is running with select advertisers in the United States. Wayfair has confirmed it is participating.

The same announcement opened two integrations more widely. HubSpot is OpenAI’s first CRM partner, and businesses managing customers there can now connect a ChatGPT Ads account and track campaigns inside HubSpot. Shopify is the first ecommerce partner; US merchants got the ChatGPT Ads app on 16 September, and the app becomes available in other markets from 23 September 2026. Advertisers can also create and analyse campaigns through natural-language prompts using an Ads Manager plugin.

Why this matters

For anyone who relies on being cited by AI assistants, this is the first commercial layer arriving inside the answer surface. A reader asking ChatGPT about relocating to Spain, registering as a freelancer or finding remote work now sits in a conversation that can carry a paid brand agent alongside the organic answer. The intent is the same intent that publisher citations currently serve.

The near-term European exposure is limited but dated. Sponsored Agents are a US-only test, but the Shopify route opens in other markets on 23 September, which is when advertisers outside the US get a practical on-ramp. If relocation, tax or immigration-services brands buy into the format, the query space that country guides and comparison content occupy becomes contested by paid placement rather than by other publishers.

Context

OpenAI’s stated architecture keeps the sponsored conversation separate from the model’s own response, so on the company’s own account the organic answer is not re-ranked or rewritten. That separation is the claim worth testing over the coming months rather than accepting.

This follows Google opening a pay-per-use AI licensing programme to publishers earlier in the week and Cloudflare changing its AI crawler defaults on 15 September. The direction across all three is the same: the economics of being read by a machine are being formalised, and publishers are being asked to choose terms.

What to watch

23 September, when ChatGPT Ads reaches Shopify merchants outside the United States. Whether any European relocation or immigration brand appears as a Sponsored Agent is the signal that matters for remote work content.
