Foreign nationals now 15.4% of Spain's self-employed register as Spanish autónomo numbers fall
Registrations by foreign nationals in Spain’s RETA self-employment regime rose from 399,890 to 532,356 between July 2022 and July 2026 — an increase of 33.1%. Over the same four years, self-employment by Spanish nationals fell by 0.3%, to 2,930,326. Foreign nationals now make up 15.4% of the register, against 12% four years ago.
The arithmetic underneath is the striking part: without foreign registrations, Spain’s self-employed population would have shrunk over the period rather than grown. The figures come from a study by UPTA, the Spanish self-employed workers’ association, using Social Security data.
Why this matters
If you are registering as autónomo in Spain as a foreign national, you are part of the only growing segment of the register — which shapes how the system is likely to treat you. Gestorías, banks and professional associations increasingly deal with people in exactly your position, and the English-language advisory market has grown around that demand. It also means the registration process, while still bureaucratic, is well-trodden by people who did not grow up with it.
There is a policy dimension worth watching too. When a category accounts for all of the growth in a register that governments use to measure entrepreneurial health, changes to the rules governing it — contribution brackets, the tarifa plana, residency requirements attached to self-employment routes — stop being technical adjustments and become decisions with visible consequences. That tends to attract more political attention, in both directions.
Context
The growth is not evenly distributed across nationalities or sectors, and the UPTA figures count registrations rather than individuals, so a person who deregisters and returns appears more than once. The direction is unambiguous, but the precision is not: treat 532,356 as the number of foreign registrations on the books in July 2026, not as a headcount of distinct people.
