Remote Work in Norway

Information, resources, and job opportunities for building your remote work career in Norway.

Norway offers remote workers a spectacular quality of life — stunning natural landscapes, a stable economy built on its sovereign wealth fund, and a working culture that genuinely prioritises balance and employee wellbeing. Oslo and Bergen both have growing tech sectors, and Norway's digital infrastructure is excellent across the country, even in relatively remote areas. The emphasis on outdoor living and the Norwegian concept of "friluftsliv" make it a unique place to combine work and lifestyle.

However, Norway is not an EU member (it is part of the EEA), which creates some particular considerations for remote workers. EU/EEA citizens can live and work freely but must register with the police after three months. Non-EU nationals need a residence permit, and there is no digital nomad visa. The Norwegian tax system is somewhat simpler than its Nordic neighbours — a flat rate of 22% on ordinary income plus a bracket tax on higher earnings, with an effective top rate around 47%. Tax residency can be triggered after 183 days in a 12-month period, though Norway also considers other factors such as your habitual residence and economic ties. Norway is strict about compliance.

The elephant in the room is cost. Norway is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for everyday living — groceries, dining out, and housing all carry a significant premium. Oslo regularly features in global top-ten lists for cost of living. That said, salaries and contract rates in Norway reflect this, and the public services and infrastructure you get in return are outstanding. If your income supports it, the quality of life is hard to beat.
