When people ask us at Remote Work Europe for genuinely accessible remote work that does not require a tech degree or a portfolio, two answers keep coming up. They are not glamorous, they will not appear in glossy LinkedIn posts – but they pay reasonably, they are properly remote, and if you speak two European languages well, you have a real edge.

Data annotation and content moderation are the quiet workhorses of the AI economy. Every large language model you have used was trained partly on work done by humans labelling text, ranking responses, transcribing audio, and flagging unsafe content. Every social platform you scroll relies on people removing what should not be there. Most of this labour happens through specialist contractors and platforms, much of it remote, and a meaningful slice of it is reserved for workers who can handle non-English content.

This is an honest guide. We will name platforms that actually pay, explain what the work feels like day to day, and address the mental health questions that anyone considering moderation work deserves to think about before they sign anything.

What data annotation actually involves

Data annotation is the work of preparing and improving the data that machine learning models learn from. The job titles vary: AI trainer, data labeller, RLHF specialist, annotation analyst, language model evaluator. The underlying work usually falls into a handful of buckets.

You might be writing prompts and ideal responses for a large language model in your native language, so the model learns how French, Polish or Greek native speakers actually phrase things. You might be ranking two AI-generated answers against each other and explaining which is better, a process called reinforcement learning from human feedback. You might be transcribing audio, labelling objects in images, drawing bounding boxes around pedestrians for self-driving research, or flagging factual errors in model outputs.

The work is genuinely remote. Most platforms run through a browser-based annotation interface, and you typically pick up tasks when you have time. Some require minimum weekly hours. Others are entirely on demand.

Pay in Europe currently sits in the €15-25 per hour range for non-specialist English work, climbing higher for in-demand languages, technical domains like medicine, law, or coding, and for graduate-level qualifications. Mercor and Outlier AI have advertised €40+ per hour for expert annotators with subject matter credentials.

What content moderation involves, and the mental health reality

Content moderation is the work of reviewing user-generated content against platform rules and removing what violates them. Moderators look at posts, images, videos, comments, and live streams flagged by users or AI systems, then decide what stays and what goes.

Bilingual moderators are particularly sought after because platforms need native-level cultural and linguistic judgement. Slang, sarcasm, regional context, and culturally-specific imagery all matter. Salaries for European bilingual moderators typically sit between €1,800 and €2,500 per month, with higher rates in Northern Europe and for rarer language combinations.

Now the part the recruiter brochures skip. Content moderation can damage your mental health, sometimes seriously. Moderators routinely view child sexual abuse material, graphic violence, suicide content, hate speech, and animal cruelty. There is a documented body of research and a string of major lawsuits, including against Meta, TikTok contractors, and others, in which moderators have developed PTSD, anxiety disorders, and depression after sustained exposure to traumatic content. Some have won substantial settlements.

Reputable employers offer wellness programmes, mandatory breaks, on-site or virtual psychological support, and limits on time spent on the most distressing content queues. Less reputable ones do not. If you are considering this work, ask specific questions before you sign: How is exposure to graphic content rotated? What mental health support is provided, by whom, and is it confidential? What happens if I need to step away from a queue?

People with personal histories of trauma, anxiety, or depression should think very carefully about whether this is the right entry route. There are other entry-level remote jobs that do not carry these costs.

The bilingual premium, and why it is genuinely real

European platforms and AI companies face a structural shortage of high-quality non-English data. Most foundation models were trained predominantly on English text. Closing the quality gap in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Dutch, and the Nordic languages is now a strategic priority across the industry, and rarer languages like Greek, Hungarian, Czech, and the Baltic languages command an even higher premium.

In practical terms, a native Polish speaker doing reinforcement learning work on Polish-language model outputs can often earn 50 to 100 percent more per hour than the same person doing equivalent English work. Native speakers of less commonly trained languages sometimes do even better. For content moderation, bilingual roles routinely sit a salary band above monolingual English-only positions.

If you are bilingual, do not undersell yourself in your application. List every language you speak, the level you speak it at using the Common European Framework of Reference scale where possible, and any cultural context expertise you have. The platforms know what this is worth.

Legitimate platforms and what they pay

The list below covers companies we have seen consistently hiring European workers as of mid-2026. Always verify current status, terms, and pay rates directly on the platform before applying, because this end of the market shifts quickly.

Scale AI runs large annotation projects for major AI labs. Hires globally including Europe through its Outlier AI platform for general work and Remotasks for specialist projects. Pay typically €15-25/hr, more for technical domains.

Appen is one of the longest-established players. Crowd-sourced work, often in shorter projects. Pay varies widely, sometimes lower than newer platforms, but the work is steady and the platform is stable.

Surge AI focuses on higher-quality annotation and pays at the upper end of the market. Strong reputation for paying on time and providing clear instructions.

Telus International AI Data Solutions, formerly Lionbridge AI, runs both annotation projects and language testing work. Generally reliable on payment.

TaskUs operates large content moderation contracts for major social platforms, with European bilingual hubs in Greece, Ireland, and elsewhere. Salaries in the €1,800-2,400 range with benefits.

Outlier AI is Scale AI’s expert annotation arm. If you have a specialist background, particularly in coding, mathematics, science, or law, this is often the highest-paying option. €30+/hr is common for verified experts.

Mercor specialises in matching specialist annotators to AI labs. Application process is more selective. Strong pay for expert profiles.

Invisible Technologies hires AI trainers and operations specialists. More structured than typical gig annotation work, often with steadier hours.

For dedicated content moderation roles in Europe, look at Teleperformance, Concentrix, Majorel, and Cognizant. These large outsourcing firms run moderation contracts for the major platforms and routinely advertise bilingual remote and hybrid roles.

Unpaid training, testing, and the minimum wage trap

Headline pay rates are not the same as actual pay rates. The most consistent feedback we get from the RWE community about annotation platforms is that the advertised hourly rate is not what the work actually pays once you factor in the time you have to invest before earning anything.

The pattern usually looks like this. Extensive unpaid training modules to qualify for tasks. A non-paid “test set” you have to complete to prove your accuracy, sometimes scored against undisclosed criteria. Then ongoing per-task payment that may or may not be guaranteed, with a quality-rating system that can lock you out of higher-paying queues if you fall below a threshold you were never fully briefed on.

Do the maths before you commit. Calculate your effective hourly rate as total earnings divided by total time invested, including training, testing, queue-waiting, and admin. Then compare that to your country’s statutory minimum wage. If you are being structurally paid below your country’s legal minimum, that is not “exposure” or “the cost of getting started.” That is exploitation.

For reference, statutory minimum hourly rates as of January 2026:

  • Germany: €13.90 / hour
  • France: €12.02 / hour
  • Ireland: €14.15 / hour
  • Netherlands: €14.71 / hour
  • UK: £12.21 / hour (April 2025 rate; April 2026 review pending)
  • Spain: statutory monthly minimum (SMI) of around €1,221 across 14 payments (raised by Royal Decree 126/2026). No formal hourly minimum, but the equivalent works out to roughly €8.80–9.30 per hour at full-time

Country-specific minimums also typically apply when the platform is recruiting based on regional accents or native-language skills. If the role requires native French speakers, French minimum wage applies, regardless of where the platform itself is based.

Red flags and how to spot scams

The legitimate end of this market is bordered by a swamp of scams, exploitative micro-task sites, and outright click farms. A few rules will keep you out of most of it.

If a platform asks you to pay anything to get started, walk away. Real annotation platforms vet you and pay you, never the other way around. If the application process consists of providing your bank details before you have done any work, walk away. If pay is quoted per task at amounts that work out to under €3 an hour, the platform is a micro-task farm and will waste your time. If a job listing is vague about who the end client is, who you will be employed or contracted by, and how often you will be paid, ask hard questions before signing.

Watch for unrealistic earnings claims in social media adverts. Anyone telling you that you can earn €50 an hour from your sofa with no qualifications is selling you something else, usually a course. Real annotation pay is honest pay for honest work, and the platforms do not need to advertise on Instagram with sports cars.

They don’t need to incentivise people to recruit either. Watch out for people sharing on social media what are clearly referral links to these platforms. You can usually spot a token at the end of the URL – If they need to pay a referral fee to recruit you, then they’re after volume rather than quality. That says a lot about their relationship with the people they hire.

There are other roles which are not scams as such, but the way they are marketed is frankly disingenuous - disguising AI training roles as something else, in a way that’s frankly unhelpful for anybody seeking work. Do you want to work for somewhere that advertises for translators, journalists, or voice artists, when they’re offering something completely different? How to use these roles as a stepping stone

Neither annotation nor moderation is a long-term career for most people. Both can be excellent on-ramps if you treat them deliberately.

Annotation work gives you genuine, hands-on exposure to how AI systems are built and evaluated. Annotators we have spoken to have gone on to roles in AI quality assurance, prompt engineering, localisation, machine learning operations, and product roles at AI companies. Document what you learn. Note which model behaviours you are evaluating, what you find interesting, what you would build differently. That documentation becomes your portfolio for the next role.

Content moderation, despite its costs, builds rare skills in policy interpretation, cross-cultural judgement, and decision-making under pressure. Former moderators move into trust and safety roles, policy work at platforms, legal operations, and incident response. The career ladder out of moderation work is real, but you have to climb it actively.

Do I need a degree to do data annotation work? For general annotation work, no. A good command of your native language, attention to detail, and reliable internet are the core requirements. For specialist tracks, particularly the higher-paying expert tiers at Outlier and Mercor, a degree or professional qualification in the relevant domain is usually required.

What mental health support should I expect from a content moderation employer? Reputable employers provide access to clinical psychologists, mandatory breaks during shifts, content rotation policies that limit exposure to the most distressing material, peer support, and clear escalation routes if you are struggling. Ask about all of this in the interview. Ask whether support is provided by independent practitioners or in-house staff, and whether sessions are confidential. If the answers are vague or defensive, that tells you what you need to know.

How reliably do these platforms pay? The named platforms in this article generally pay reliably, though there have been historical complaints about delays at Appen and occasional account closures at Scale AI subsidiaries. Newer platforms like Surge and Mercor have a stronger recent reputation. Always read recent reviews on independent forums before committing time to a new platform, and never let unpaid work accumulate past a single payment cycle without escalating.

Are these jobs taxable as employment or self-employment in Europe? Almost always self-employment. Most platforms classify you as an independent contractor, which means you are responsible for declaring the income and paying social security and tax in your country of residence. In Spain that means registering as autónomo if your earnings cross the threshold, in France micro-entrepreneur, and so on. Plan for this from the start, not in March of next year.

Can I do this work alongside another job? Yes, particularly annotation work, which is often genuinely on-demand. Many people use it as supplementary income alongside studies or part-time work. Content moderation tends to be full-time shift work and is harder to combine.

What languages pay best right now? The highest premiums in 2026 are for native speakers of less commonly trained European languages, particularly Greek, Hungarian, Czech, the Baltic languages, and the Nordic languages outside Swedish. Major languages still pay well above English baselines. Specialist domain knowledge in any language, particularly medical, legal, and scientific, multiplies the rate further.
