TL;DR

  • Monzo advertises 34 fully remote roles and every single one requires you to live in the United Kingdom.
  • It has offices in London, Cardiff, Dublin, Barcelona and Madrid – and not one advert offers remote work anywhere in the EU, including from its own Spanish and Irish entities.
  • Remote eligibility splits by function, not seniority. Data is 10 of 11 roles remote, up to Director level. Product has no remote route at all.
  • Monzo never describes itself as remote-first. Its UK adverts say there is no mandated office attendance; its Barcelona adverts say three days a week.

Monzo is one of the clearest examples of what Remote Work Europe calls an open-to-remote employer: a company that is not remote-first, runs real offices, states attendance expectations in writing – and advertises a substantial number of roles as fully remote anyway.

The catch is geographic, and it is absolute.

Does Monzo hire remote workers across Europe?

No. Monzo’s remote roles are open to UK residents only.

As at 7 September 2026, 34 Monzo roles on the Remote Work Europe jobs board carry a UK-remote-eligible location line. The usual wording is “Cardiff, London or Remote (UK)”, and the adverts spell out what that means: “we’re open to distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London)”.

There is no advert offering remote work anywhere in the EU.

This matters more than it might sound, because Monzo is not a UK-only company any more. It received its EU banking licence from the European Central Bank and the Central Bank of Ireland in December 2025, with Dublin as its EU headquarters. It has offices in Barcelona and Madrid with more than fifty employees between them, and told Tech.eu in May 2026 that it intends to grow that team over the following year.

So if you are in Spain, Monzo is hiring near you. It is simply not hiring you remotely.

The Barcelona engineering adverts state the arrangement plainly: “Hybrid model: 3 days a week in the office”. The Madrid roles say you will be “based in our Madrid office 2 – 3 days a week”. Same company, same year, and a completely different answer from the one UK applicants get.

What does Monzo say about remote working?

Monzo does not use the phrase “remote-first” anywhere on its careers site. It describes an office-anchored company with a distributed-worker category alongside it: offices in “London, Cardiff, Dublin and Barcelona”, with “lots of Monzonauts working remotely, too”, and the note that “each job description will say where the role is usually based”.

The operative policy sits inside the adverts rather than on the careers page, and two variants recur across the UK roles:

  • “We value meeting in person but we don’t have a mandated requirement on office attendance, even if you’re nearby.”
  • “We love meeting in person, but there’s no pressure to come into the office, even if you’re nearby.”

That is a genuinely strong position, and stronger than many companies that do call themselves remote-first. It is worth reading carefully, though: it applies to the UK. Monzo runs two working models in one company.

A practical note if you are in customer operations: “We trust you to work enough hours to do your job well, at times that suit you and your team” comes with the qualifier “If you’re in customer operations, you’ll have set shifts.”

Which Monzo departments hire remotely?

This is where the useful detail is. Remote eligibility at Monzo tracks the function far more than the level.

Data is the most remote-friendly function at Monzo – ten of eleven roles are UK-remote, and that includes Director of Data, Payments. If you work in data and you live in the UK, Monzo is one of the more open employers of its size.

Product is closed. All five roles are London or Barcelona. Lead Product Manager, Payments is “London – Hybrid”. Chief of Staff, Product requires “the office 2–3 days a week”.

Engineering splits by geography rather than by seniority. UK engineering roles read “London or UK Remote” – including Engineering Director, EU and Senior Engineering Manager. Barcelona engineering roles carry the three-day model at every level, with no remote option.

Finance is largely London and says so precisely. Senior Treasury FX Manager: “based in our London office, with a minimum expectation of working 2 days per week from the office.” Senior Financial Reporting Analyst: “we aim to come in as a team twice a week (usually Tuesdays and Wednesdays).”

Why the risk and compliance roles are tied to a place

Every Dublin, Madrid and Barcelona risk role carries a clause worth understanding, because it explains a constraint that looks cultural but is not:

“appointment will be conditional on Monzo being fully satisfied that the appointee meets the requirements as set out in the Fitness and Probity Standards issued by the Central Bank of Ireland”

Those roles are Controlled Functions under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Individual Accountability Framework. Several add that “you will be expected to travel to Monzo’s head offices in Dublin and/or London from time to time.” Regulatory accountability attaches a named individual to a jurisdiction, and that is why these roles are hybrid rather than remote.

Two UK exceptions prove the rule: Fraud Compliance Manager is “Remote (UK)”, as is Credit Model Validation Manager.

Do not screen yourself out on seniority

There is no blanket rule at Monzo that leadership must be on site, and assuming one will cost you.

Director-level roles in Data, Design and Engineering are UK-remote-eligible. Director-level roles in Product and Operations – Senior Product Director, Business Banking, and Director of Investments and Pensions – are London. The difference is the department, not the grade.

Many of these are remote gateway roles in the sense that matters: the adverts ask you to prove you can do credit risk, or data science, or design. None of them asks you to prove you have worked remotely before.

What else to know before you apply to Monzo

Read the advert body, not the location tag. Monzo’s Greenhouse location labels and advert text sometimes disagree. Lead Data Scientist is labelled “Cardiff, London or Remote (UK)” while its body reads “London or Barcelona | UK remote”. Senior Technical Program Manager is labelled “London” while its body reads “London or Remote (UK)”. The body is the one to trust.

Some UK-remote roles still expect London travel. Five adverts carry “If you live outside of London and we ask you to come into the office, Monzo will support you with the costs”, and others mention “working from the London office on occasional basis”. Paid for, but worth knowing.

Visa sponsorship is offered on a subset and stated in the advert. Around fifteen roles carry ”✅ We can sponsor visas”, usually alongside “✈️ We can help you relocate to the UK”. One Data role offers relocation “to the UK or Spain”, which is rare.

These are employment contracts, not freelance. Every advert is a permanent role with a published salary band, benefits and equity or incentive awards. The only exception found was a twelve-month fixed-term Sales Support Specialist role in London. UK adverts publish salary bands; Barcelona engineering adverts do not, though Spanish risk roles do – €75,000 to €95,000 for Senior Risk & Compliance Officer.

Kit and budget: all employees get MacBooks, with “extra support for your work-from-home setup” for fully remote staff, and a learning budget of £1,000 a year in the UK or €1,200 in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work for Monzo remotely from Spain? Not on the current adverts. Monzo employs in Spain through its Barcelona and Madrid offices on a hybrid basis of two to three days a week. No Spanish role is advertised as fully remote.

Is Monzo a remote-first company? No, and it does not claim to be. It is an office-based company with a large distributed UK workforce and no mandated UK attendance – which is a real and unusual commitment, but a different thing from being built without offices.

Which Monzo teams are easiest to join remotely? Data, Design, Borrowing and Marketing all currently show every or nearly every role as UK-remote. Product and Operations show none.

Does Monzo sponsor visas? For some roles, and it says so in the advert. If a role does not mention sponsorship, treat that as unstated rather than as a refusal, and ask.
