What we’ll cover

Shade will guide us through a practical session on getting your renta right – the digital-first way:

  • What’s new for the 2025 renta – changes to brackets, deductions, and what the Agencia Tributaria expects from autonomos this year
  • What you can actually deduct – the expenses that reduce your bill and the ones that don’t qualify, explained clearly
  • Common autonomo mistakes – the errors that trigger questions from Hacienda and how to avoid them
  • The digital gestoria approach – how Xolo handles the entire renta process for you, from document collection to electronic filing
  • Your questions answered – bring them. We’ll answer what we can and be honest about when you need individual professional advice

Please note: This is an informational session to help you understand the renta process and what’s involved – it is not individual tax advice and cannot replace a consultation with your own accountant or fiscal adviser. If you have questions specific to your personal tax situation, the best next step is to talk to Xolo’s team directly or consult a qualified professional.

Who is this for?

This webinar is specifically for self-employed autonomos in Spain – whether you’ve been filing rentas for years or this is your first one.

It’s especially relevant if you:

  • Filed your own renta last year and aren’t sure you did it right
  • Are using a gestoria but want to understand what they’re actually doing
  • Recently became autonomo and have never filed a Spanish tax return
  • Work remotely for international clients and need to understand how that income is declared
  • Have heard the rules changed and want to know what’s different for 2025

No prior tax expertise needed – Shade will explain everything in plain English.

Questions answered in this webinar

Can’t watch the full recording? Here are the key questions from the live audience, answered by Shade and Maya.

I’m an employee now but switching to autónomo next year – how different will my tax return be?

Not dramatically different. The main change is that what your employer currently handles – IRPF withholdings, social security contributions – you’ll need to manage yourself, quarterly. The tax return itself follows the same structure, but you’ll have much more visibility into how it all works. We’d recommend using an accountant for at least your first year as autónomo.

I’m in my second year as autónomo with a digital nomad visa – do I need to file?

If you became tax resident and worked during 2025, yes – you file now for last year’s income. If you only arrived in Spain in 2026, you don’t need to file until next year. Either way, make sure your quarterly returns are being handled – Xolo can take care of those going forward.

I was employed in January and February, then became autónomo in March. Where do I declare the early income?

It all goes in the general taxable base. The important thing is to check that your former employer withheld IRPF correctly for those two months. The rest you report as autónomo activity. If this is your situation, it’s worth checking with an accountant to make sure the transition is handled cleanly.

Can I still claim pension contributions for last year?

Contributions must have been paid within the 2025 tax year – by December 31st. You can’t retroactively claim contributions that weren’t made during the year.

I work from home – can I deduct part of my rent?

Yes, proportional to the square metres dedicated to your office space. Your address must be correctly registered with social security. The deduction is real but often modest – it’s based on the actual space you can demonstrate is used exclusively for work. With Xolo, you can deduct this quarterly via your Modelo 130, rather than waiting for the annual return. Keep your utility bills as supporting documentation.

Do I need a separate accountant if I use Xolo? What about tools like FreeAgent?

For standard autónomo situations, Xolo handles everything – no separate accountant needed. Their team includes tax advisors who know the Spanish system inside out, including regional deductions. Tools like FreeAgent are accounting software only; Xolo provides human expertise on top of the digital platform. If you have complex international affairs or multiple properties in different countries, you might want additional specialist advice – but Xolo can point you in the right direction.

I’m not autónomo – can Xolo still help me file my renta?

Yes – renta filing is available as a standalone service. You don’t need to be a Xolo autónomo client to use it.

Can I deduct social security regularisation payments or COVID ERTE benefit repayments?

Social security payments can be expensed – provide bank statements as proof of payment. Xolo accepts bank slips for social security since there’s no formal invoice issued by the system.

Can I just file the renta myself?

You can, especially if your situation is straightforward and you’re comfortable navigating the Agencia Tributaria website in Spanish. But be aware that regional deductions are almost never pre-populated in Hacienda’s automatic draft – an accountant will catch savings you’d miss. Even many native Spanish autónomos use a gestoría for their annual filing.

Key dates to remember

  • Filing season: 1 April – 30 June 2026
  • Payment date (single payment or first 60% instalment): 30 June
  • Second instalment (if using the 60/40 split, interest-free): 5 November
  • Deferred payment option available for up to 24 months (4.25% interest applies)

Don’t leave it until end of June – allow time to gather missing facturas and work through any queries with your accountant.
