Greece overhauls visa and residency system with new unified law

Greece’s Law 5275/2026 introduces sweeping changes to visa and residency processing. In-country Digital Nomad Visa applications have been abolished since 5 February – applicants must now apply at a Greek consulate before arrival. Authorities have a 90-day decision deadline, extendable by 30 days for complex cases.

For existing permit holders, late renewals are now permitted up to three months past expiry, but with a EUR 100 per month penalty. The changes aim to reduce processing backlogs and bring Greece in line with other EU member states that require consular application.

Greece remains one of Europe’s most attractive DNV destinations. The 50% tax reduction for seven years under the non-dom regime is among the continent’s best deals, and the income threshold sits at EUR 3,500 per month. But the new consular-first requirement means planning further ahead – applying from inside Greece on a tourist visa is no longer an option.
