Ireland raises employment permit salary thresholds and confirms remote work review findings
Ireland has increased the salary thresholds required for employment permits, affecting both EU and non-EU nationals seeking work authorisation in the country. The changes are part of a broader review of Ireland’s labour migration framework, which also examined the impact of remote working arrangements on permit conditions.
The statutory review of Ireland’s right-to-request remote work legislation has confirmed strong uptake since its March 2024 commencement, with 94% of employee requests approved fully or partially. Employers reported a low administrative burden from processing these requests, suggesting the framework is working largely as intended.
However, the Workplace Relations Commission identified gaps in rural SME awareness and will issue stronger guidance templates along with a targeted awareness campaign. The review’s findings reinforce Ireland’s position as one of the more remote-work-friendly EU member states, though the right remains a “right to request” rather than an automatic entitlement, and employers can still refuse with objective, written reasons.
