Bulgaria opens digital nomad visa applications with EUR 31,000 income threshold
Bulgaria began accepting applications for its new digital nomad residence permit on December 20, 2025, joining the growing list of European countries actively courting remote workers. The permit requires proof of annual income of at least EUR 31,000 and is valid for one year with one renewal possible.
The timing is significant: Bulgaria joined both the eurozone and the Schengen area in 2025, removing the currency exchange friction and border control complications that previously made it less convenient as a base for European remote workers. Combined with its low cost of living and improving digital infrastructure, the country is positioning itself as an increasingly attractive option.
Applicants must demonstrate they work remotely for a company or clients outside Bulgaria and carry adequate health insurance. The relatively modest income threshold compared to Western European programmes (Spain requires EUR 34,188, Portugal EUR 44,160) makes it accessible to a wider range of remote professionals.
