Hybrid work formalisation accelerates across European tech sector

New compensation and workplace data shows hybrid work arrangements are being increasingly formalised across European technology companies, with adoption rates now exceeding 85% in most major markets. The Netherlands and France lead at 96%, followed by Germany at 89%, Spain at 88%, and the UK at 85%.

The shift from informal pandemic-era arrangements to documented hybrid policies marks a maturation of the European remote work landscape. Companies are moving from ad-hoc flexibility to structured frameworks that define in-office days, remote entitlements, and cross-border working provisions. Meanwhile, Eurofound data shows the broader European workforce averaging 1 to 1.5 work-from-home days per week, with on-site work actually rising from 36% to 41% between 2023 and 2024.

The picture that emerges is nuanced: while headline-grabbing return-to-office mandates from US tech giants attract attention, European employers are largely consolidating hybrid as the default rather than reversing it. For remote workers and job seekers, the formalisation trend is broadly positive — it means hybrid rights are being codified rather than remaining at managerial discretion.
