Spain tightens digital nomad visa enforcement with stricter residency checks

Spanish authorities are tightening scrutiny of digital nomad visa applications and renewals amid growing fraud cases. Renewal applications now require proof of at least six months’ residency per year in Spain, closing a loophole that some applicants had used to maintain the visa while spending most of their time elsewhere.

The income threshold has also shifted upward following the February 2026 SMI increase: applicants now need to demonstrate monthly income of at least EUR 2,849 (200% of the new minimum interprofessional salary of EUR 1,221/month). This applies to both new applications and renewals.

For digital nomads already holding or planning to apply for Spain’s DNV, the message is clear: the visa is becoming a genuine residency commitment rather than a convenient travel document. Those who cannot demonstrate meaningful presence in Spain may face difficulties at renewal. Current holders should ensure they maintain proper residency records, including padron registration, utility bills, and proof of address, well ahead of their renewal date.
