Spain's renta 2025 tax filing campaign opens with expanded instant refunds

Spain’s annual income tax filing campaign for the 2025 fiscal year opened on April 8, six days later than the usual early-April start due to the Semana Santa holiday period. The campaign runs until June 30, with the expanded “Direct Income” (Renta Directa) instant filing system now available to nine million taxpayers — double last year’s eligible population. Early filers using the simplified system could see refunds within 48 hours.

Why this matters

If you are an autonomo in Spain, the renta is not optional and the deadline is firm. The expanded Direct Income system means more taxpayers can file and receive refunds almost instantly, but this simplified route is primarily designed for straightforward employment income. Self-employed freelancers with deductions, international clients, or Beckham Law status will still need to file the full declaracion, which requires more careful preparation. If you are unsure what your obligations are as a freelancer in Spain, our autonomo guide covers registration, social security contributions, and the tax calendar. For the specifics of seguridad social payments, we have a dedicated breakdown.

Key changes for the 2025 renta include updated deduction rules and the ongoing shift toward mandatory digital filing. If you use a gestoria, ensure they are filing on your behalf early in the window — waiting until June means joining the rush and risking processing delays.

What to watch

The June 30 deadline is absolute. For autonomos with international income, the interaction between Spanish tax obligations and your country of origin’s tax treaty is where mistakes happen most often. If you are filing for the first time as a digital nomad or recently became autonomo, professional advice is worth the cost.

Remote Work Europe is running a free renta webinar on April 28 with Xolo Spain’s Shade Yllarramendi Fuentes, covering what’s changed, what you can deduct, and how to file without the stress. If you are considering going digital with your tax and accounting, Xolo’s Spain onboarding process is designed specifically for freelancers filing from here.
