Remote Work in Austria

Information, resources, and job opportunities for building your remote work career in Austria.

Austria rarely tops the digital-nomad listicles, but the case for it as a European remote-work base is genuinely strong. Vienna routinely tops international liveability rankings (Mercer, EIU), the country has dense fibre coverage even outside the major cities, public transport is excellent, and the cultural and outdoor lifestyle is hard to beat. EU and EEA citizens have full freedom of movement, which makes Austria one of the easier Central European bases to relocate to from elsewhere in the bloc.

Austria does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. For non-EU remote workers, the relevant routes are the Red-White-Red Card (for skilled workers and self-employed key workers) and the Settlement Permit for self-employment (Niederlassungsbewilligung – selbständig). Both involve a points-based or income-based assessment and benefit from professional advice – verify the current requirements with the official Austrian migration guidance or a qualified immigration adviser before applying. Tax in Austria is progressive, with personal income tax rates rising from 0% at the lowest band to a top rate of 55% on very high incomes; corporate income tax is 23%. Standard VAT is 20%. The social-security contribution structure is significant for self-employed workers and worth modelling carefully when comparing Austria to lower-tax European jurisdictions.

Vienna is the obvious base – international, English-friendly in tech and professional circles, with a strong coworking scene (Impact Hub Vienna, Talent Garden, weXelerate among others). Graz, Salzburg, Linz, and Innsbruck are all credible alternatives, with Innsbruck especially attractive to remote workers who want Alpine access on the doorstep. Internet infrastructure is excellent across urban Austria, public healthcare is among the strongest in Europe, and the country sits comfortably inside the Schengen Area for travel.
