Digital Nomad Visa Index 2026: Spain tops global rankings as 50+ countries compete

The 2026 Digital Nomad Visa Index ranks Spain as the world’s top destination for digital nomads, followed by Malta, Portugal, Germany, and Hungary. More than 50 countries now offer dedicated digital nomad or remote work visas, with Europe leading on comprehensive packages that combine tax benefits with residency pathways.

Why this matters: The index highlights a clear trend: income requirements are rising across the board. Estonia now demands €4,500 per month, Portugal €3,680, and Spain €2,849. For remote workers planning their next move, the gap between affordable and premium digital nomad destinations is widening. Europe dominates the top rankings because its visas increasingly offer genuine paths to long-term residency, not just temporary stays.

A separate EY Global Immigration Index confirms that as of February 2026, more than 48 jurisdictions worldwide provide digital nomad or remote work visas. Bulgaria launched its Digital Nomad Permit in 2025, and Germany is expected to introduce a dedicated remote work visa later in 2026.
