Germany's 2026 Visa Handbook hints at dedicated remote work permit
Germany’s Federal Foreign Office has released the 2026 edition of its Visa Handbook containing a new chapter outlining criteria for a forthcoming dedicated Remote-Work Visa. While the permit itself will not launch until later in 2026, consular officers now have interim guidance on the expected requirements.
Why this matters: Germany would become one of the largest European economies to offer a specific remote work visa, joining Spain, Portugal, Greece, and others. Currently, digital nomads from visa-waiver countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia) can use Section 19c residence permits as a workaround, but a dedicated pathway would simplify the process significantly. The handbook also notes the abolition of the internal “remonstration” appeal for visa refusals — unsuccessful applicants must now re-file or go directly to court.
Germany’s entry into the dedicated remote work visa market could shift the competitive landscape significantly, given the country’s strong infrastructure, central European location, and established freelance visa (Freiberufler) tradition.
