UK makes SSP, paternity and parental leave day-one rights from April 6

From April 6, 2026, statutory sick pay (SSP), paternity leave, and ordinary parental leave all become day-one employment rights in the UK, removing previous qualifying period requirements. The changes are part of the Employment Rights Act implementation wave.

SSP will be payable from the first day of sickness absence rather than the fourth, at the lower of GBP 123.25 per week or 80% of average weekly earnings. The lower earnings limit is being removed entirely, meaning an estimated 1.3 million additional employees will qualify for the first time. Paternity and unpaid parental leave similarly lose their continuous employment requirements.

For remote workers moving between roles or starting new positions, these changes provide immediate protection from day one. The reforms mark a significant shift in UK employment law, with the government’s “Plan to Make Work Pay” rolling out further provisions throughout 2026. Employees have been able to give notice of intent to take paternity leave since February 18, 2026.
